Mat Latos scattered five hits over six scoreless innings as the Cincinnati Reds edged the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 in the series opener at Busch Stadium on Monday night.
Latos struck out five, issued three walks and extended his scoreless innings streak to 17 on the way to picking up his second victory of the season. Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the year. Joey Votto put the Reds on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single to right field. He finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI. Xavier Paul knocked in what would turn out to be the winning run on an RBI ground out in the top of the fourth inning.
Those were the only two runs surrendered by St. Louis starting pitcher Adam Wainwright, who falls to 4-2 on the season after allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings of work. Yadier Molina was the offensive star of the game for the Cardinals, turning in a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and a stolen base in the loss for St. Louis who have now dropped their last three games at home.
The Cardinals and Reds will continue their series tomorrow night at Busch Stadium. Jaime Garcia will be on the mound for St. Louis, while Cincinnati counters with Bronson Arroyo. The first pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m.
