The first of several outfield prospects in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system has been called up from Memphis. Randal Grichuk, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for third basemen David Freese, was recalled from Memphis late Sunday night. Grichuk turned heads this spring has been off to a solid start this season, hitting .310 with 3 home runs and 17 RBI. Also making the trip up Interstate 55 will be infielder Greg Garcia. Garcia has hit .267 with 5 homers and 14 RBI in 21 games at Class AAA. Garcia can play shortstop and second base and adds another left handed bat on the bench for manager Mike Matheny.
To make room for those additions, the Cardinals optioned second basemen Kolten Wong and outfielder Shane Robinson to Memphis. Wong hit .225 with five RBI in 20 games this season, but he had scuffled at the plate as of late, batting just .194 since April 12th. Robinson has experienced similar struggles this year. Robinson is 2 for his last 16 and is batting an even .100 this season. Team officials hope the stint in the minors will give both players an opportunity to get back on track by playing every day.
Grichuk and Garcia are expected to join the Cardinals prior to the start of Monday’s game against Milwaukee.
