(St. Louis – May 15, 2010)
Before this season started I would’ve been willing to bet that most of Cardinal Nation didn’t know who Jaime Garcia was. They wouldn’t have told you that the redbirds drafted him in the 22nd round of the 2005 draft. My how quickly that has changed.
Admittedly, I was one of those people who didn’t expect much from Garcia coming into spring training. He was coming off of Tommy John surgery and hadn’t done anything in the minors to impress me. So I honestly thought that he’d get nothing more than a look during Spring Training. I don’t think I’ve been happier to have been wrong in my life.
Through his first seven starts Garcia is 4-2 with an ERA of 1.42. That is the 2nd best ERA of a Cardinals rookie through his first seven starts in club history. Along the way he’s also faced some of the best pitchers in the game. In one of his first starts of the year he faced Tim Lincecum. He has proven himself to be more than just the back end of the rotation guy.
Last night Garcia had another good outing against the Reds. He lasted 6 and 1/3 innings only allowing 2 runs and striking out 6. He could have gone longer, but I think Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan are trying to protect him. Afterall, he is still developing as a pitcher.
He has proven himself to be more than just the back end of the rotation guy. I think that if he can stay healthy he could end up as our third starter by the end of the season.
